Saronic Gulf with Saronic Islands

The Saronic Islands ( Greek Νησιά του Αργοσαρωνικού , Nisiá tou Argosaronikoú, also: the Sarons ) is a group of seven larger (and numerous smaller) islands, some of which are located in the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea , and some to the south of the Argolis peninsula . The Saronic Islands are particularly popular with Greek tourists. They belong to the prefecture of Piraeus and thus to the Greek region of Attica . The Greek term 'Argosaronic Islands' also includes several other small, uninhabited islands in the Argolic Gulf that politically belong to the Peloponnese region . The Saronic Islands or the Saronic Gulf got their name from the mythical King Saron , who is said to have drowned while hunting near the Psifean Sea in prehistoric times.

The inhabited islands can be reached by ferries directly from Piraeus . There are overnight accommodations on all islands.

Geologically, the (half) islands of Aegina, Methana and Poros belong to the northwesternmost foothills of the Aegean island arc, on which the still active volcanoes Methana, Milos , Santorin and Nisyros are located. Methana is geographically a peninsula, but in terms of landscape and traffic it is one of the islands of the Saronic Gulf.
