The Boguchany Reservoir with its Bogutschanskaja GES power plant ( Russian: Богучанская ГЭС ) is a hydropower plant project on the Angara River in Russia , Krasnoyarsk region , Siberia, which was completed in 2012 . In the 1990s, the construction started in 1974 was stopped due to lack of money. Work resumed in 2006; On October 15, 2012, the power plant was inaugurated after the first two of nine turbines had been installed.

The project is one of the largest hydropower projects in Russia and is intended to supply an aluminum plant and other industries. In terms of content, the reservoir will be one of the 20 largest on earth.

Today's builder and later operator is the joint stock company OAO Bogutschanskaja GES, which is controlled by RusHydro (formerly HydroOGK ) and RUSAL . The structure consists of a 774 meter long gravity dam combined with a 1,816 meter long rock embankment . In addition to 79 m, the height is also 87 m and the concrete volume is 1.612 and 3 million m³.

The project also has some drawbacks. Opponents mention: resettlement of hundreds of people, deteriorated water quality, also poorer groundwater, destroyed fishing areas, poor planning and execution.

At Angara there are three more hydropower plants that have already been completed above Bogutschany: Ust-Ilimsk (1977), Bratsk (1964) and Irkutsk (1956). There are also other unfinished dam structures in Russia: for example the Bureja dam on the Bureja river and Irganai and Zaramag in the Caucasus. Against protests from the local area and environmental groups, construction is to continue on these too.
