The Bureja Dam (or Bureja hydropower plant; Russian Бурейская ГЭС / Bureiskaja GES ; English Bureya Dam or "Bureyskaya Hydropower Plant" (BHPP)) is a large dam with a hydropower plant on the Bureja in Russia 's Far East. The dam, which is located in the Amur Oblast and Khabarovsk regions , was completed in 2009 and generates electricity.
Construction began in the 1970s but progressed slowly. In the 1990s the project was stopped due to lack of money. Construction has continued since 1999. In 2003 the first two turbines (200 MW each) were put into operation, later also the third and fourth (300 MW each). Three of them were temporary machines that were later replaced. In the meantime, 1000 megawatts have been generated, and in the final stage there will be six turbines of 335 MW each, which will generate 2010 MW.
Since the project was completed in 2009, the Far East can be supplied with better and more stable electricity, fossil fuels amounting to 5.2 million tons of coal have been saved annually and electricity can be exported. In 2005 the operating company “ Unified Energy System of Russia ” (RAO UESR) or “EES Rossii” offered to export 800 MW to North and South Korea.
The barrier structure is a gravity dam approx. 140 m high . According to two different sources, its length is 765 or 810 meters.
The Bureja is a northern tributary of the Amur . The dam protects the Bureja and the middle reaches of the Amur from flooding.
The reservoir is 234 km long, 5 km wide and up to 124 m deep. It has an area of 740 km² and a storage capacity of 20,940 million m³. The usable storage space of this is 10,700 million m³. Before the reservoir could be dammed up to the planned height, however, the Izvestkowaja - Tschegdomyn railway line had to be laid.
