Tschegdomyn ( Russian Чегдомын ) is an urban-type settlement in the Khabarovsk region in the Far East of Russia . It has 13,048 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement lies on the western edge of the Burejagebirges in the valley of the river Chegdomyn that far in the Bureya creek Urgal flows. Tschegdomyn is located about 340 kilometers (as the crow flies) northwest of the regional capital Khabarovsk .

The settlement is the administrative center of the Rajons Verkhnyaya Bureya (Upper Bureya). It consists of two relatively separate districts in the valley of the Tschegdomyn River and on the ridge between Tschegdomyn and Urgal.

history

The place was founded in 1939 when the development of coal deposits began here. At the same time the construction of a railway line to Tschegdomyn was started, starting from Iswestkowy (station Iswestkowaja ) on the Trans-Siberian Railway . At the beginning of the German-Soviet War in 1941, the line was practically completed, but was dismantled in 1942–1943 because the material was needed for more important war routes.

After the end of the war, the railway line was restored and put into operation in 1951. In 1948 coal mining was resumed, and in 1949 Tschegdomyn received urban-type settlement status. In 1956 the administrative center of the 63,600 km² large Verkhnebureinski Rajon, which had been in existence since 1927, was moved from Sredny Urgal , which had held this function since 1943, to Tschegdomyn.
