Bikin ( Russian Бики́н ) is a city in the Khabarovsk region ( Russia ) with 17,154 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Ussuri lowland, about 200 km south of the regional capital Khabarovsk on the right bank of the river Bikin of the same name , a right tributary of the Ussuri . The wooded foothills of the Sichote-Alin begin immediately to the east of the city .

The city of Bikin is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

Bikin was created in 1885 as Stanitsa of the Ussuri Cossacks under the name Bikinskaya . Its importance grew with the construction of the Ussuri Railway Khabarovsk - Vladivostok 1894-97 (later the eastern section of the Trans-Siberian Railway). In 1926 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement and in 1938 city rights.

Culture and sights

In Bikin there is a small local museum dedicated to v. a. the history of the place and the living conditions of the first settlers. From time to time there are also exhibitions by local artists.

Economy and Infrastructure

The main branch of the economy is the wood processing industry, there are also companies in the light and food industry. Agriculture is practiced in the area (vegetables, technical crops, cattle).

Bikin is on the Trans-Siberian Railway (8756 km from Moscow ) and on the M60 "Ussuri" Khabarovsk - Vladivostok road .
