Elban ( Russian Эльба́н ) is an urban-type settlement in the Khabarovsk region ( Russia ) with 11,934 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located on the western edge of the Amur lowlands in the Far East of Russia, a good 200 km as the crow flies northwest of the regional capital, Khabarovsk . The settlement is located on the left bank of the Elban river of the same name (name probably of Nano origin), which flows 20 km east into Lake Ommi and then into the Amur . 15 kilometers south of the village is the north shore of Lake Bolon , the largest lake in the Amur lowlands with an area of ​​338 km².

Elban is part of the Amursk Rajons , whose administrative center Amursk is 35 km to the northeast.

history

The place was founded in 1936 in connection with the construction of the railway line from Khabarovsk to the newly founded city ​​of Komsomolsk on the Amur . The settlement experienced a relatively rapid upswing with the establishment of an armaments factory (“mechanical works”), which started operations during the Second World War .

In 1951 Elban was given urban-type settlement status .

Economy and Infrastructure

The largest operation in the settlement is a Woschod explosives factory , which emerged from the plant built in the 1940s. Vegetable growing and dairy farming are practiced in the area.

The settlement lies on the established railway line Volotschajewka-Dzemgi (route km 276), which connects the Trans-Siberian Railway and the regional capital Khabarovsk with the Baikal-Amur-Magistrale and Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Along the railway line there is also a road from Komsomolsk, 75 km away, to Elban.

Southeast of Elban there is a long wave transmitter for the radio navigation system RSDN-20 ( Alpha ).
