Alpha (radio navigation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alpha (official name RSDN-20 , where RSDN stands for Radiotechnitscheskaja sistema dalnei nawigazii, Russian Радиотехническая система дальней навигации , radio- technical long-distance navigation system in the radio frequency range, is a Russian system for long-wave radio navigation system . In terms of functionality, it corresponds to the international OMEGA system, which was in operation until 1997.

The Alpha system consists of five transmitters on the territory of the former Soviet Union, but their range goes far beyond that. The tall, presumably self- radiating transmission masts are located near Novosibirsk (master station), Krasnodar , Komsomolsk am Amur ( often referred to as Khabarovsk because of its location in the Khabarovsk region ) and Rewda ( Kola Peninsula ) in Russia and northwest of Turkmenabat in Turkmenistan (17th century ) km west of the city of Seýdi , formerly Neftesavodsk in Russian ). These transmitters broadcast signals each 3.6 seconds long at the frequencies 11.905 kHz, 12.649 kHz and 14.881 kHz. The location can be determined from the phase shift of the received signals using hyperbola navigation .

Since the system is subject to military secrecy , there is hardly any official information. The Seýdi transmitter is said to be out of service today. The first test signals were collected in the USA in 1962. The broadcasting network Krasnodar - Novosibirsk - Komsomolsk went into operation in 1968; its extension from the west to the far east of Russia suggests that it was designed for military navigation from the American polar region to South Asia and the Indian Ocean . In addition to flight navigation , the longitudinal waves (as with OMEGA) also allow the navigation of submarines .
