Maiski ( Russian Ма́йский ) is an urban-type settlement in the Khabarovsk region ( Russia ) with 2598 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 380 km as the crow flies east of the regional administrative center of Khabarovsk on the peninsula between the bays Sapadnaya ("West Bay") and Yugosapadnaya ("Southwest Bay"), which form the inner part of the Sovetskaya Gawan Bay ("Soviet Port", formerly Imperatorskaya Gawan, "Kaiserhafen") on the Sea of Japan .

Maiski belongs to the Rajon Sowetsko-Gawanski and is about 7 km to the northwest from its administrative seat Sovetskaya Gawan . It is the seat and only locality of the municipality Rabotschi possjolok Maiski . A larger former military settlement with the (now unofficial) name Bjaude belongs to the place, about 3 km to the east .

history

The place was created in the 1950s in connection with the construction of a thermal power station (Russian GRES ) on the banks of the Sapadnaya Bay to supply the area around Sovetskaya Gawan and Wanino . The power plant and the associated workers' settlement as a district of Sovetskaya Gawan initially bore the name DESNA ( acronym of D alnewostochnaja e lektrostanzija s pezialnowo nas natschenija, Russian for Far Eastern power plant for special use ).

In 1959 the place was spun off as an independent urban-type settlement and named Maiski after the river Mai, which flows northwest into the Sapadnaya Bay ; the word mai also stands for the month in Russian, but in this case has no relation to the river and place names. In 1970 the power plant was also renamed Maiskaja GRES .

traffic

About 1.5 km east of the center of the Maiski settlement is the Desna station (based on the original name of the power station) at km 457 of the Komsomolsk am Amur  - Sovetskaya Gawan railway line . It is only used for freight traffic and is the starting point for the siding to the Maiskaja GRES thermal power station. The nearest passenger stations are in Sovetskaya Gawan and Vanino. The Khabarovsk - Sovetskaya Gawan regional road runs through Maiski and reaches the coast of the Sea of Japan north of the settlement, between Maiski and Vanino, after crossing the Sichote-Alin Mountains.
