The Elbepark Dresden (own spellings: ELBEPARK DRESDEN , ELBEPARK Dresden ) is a shopping center in the Dresden district of Kaditz in the north-west of the city. In 2012 almost 10 million customers visited the Elbepark.

Opening until 2008

The shopping center opened in 1995 and is owned by Kurt Krieger, the owner of the Höffner furniture stores . In 2008 the shopping center had 74,500 square meters of retail space and 4,500 parking spaces.

Expansion 2009 - April 2010

From January 2009 to Easter 2010, the Elbepark was expanded for around 80 million euros. The sales area was expanded by 8,500 square meters and the number of parking spaces increased to 5,000. The plans met with resistance, especially from downtown retailers, because the Elbepark was being expanded again with a range of products relevant to the city center. At the end of November 2008, the city council's urban development committee decided that a corresponding development plan should be drawn up and that experts should examine the effects.

With 83,000 square meters of retail space and more than 180 shops, the Elbepark completed its renovation in mid-April 2010, 1.4 kilometers of shopping streets were created, an open T-Mall became a roofed eighth mall with an accessible upper floor and 1500 new parking spaces on the roof, from which have six entrances to the center. A special feature is a children's area with 1,600 square meters on the upper floor. The infrastructure around the Elbepark was expanded and restructured.

After the expansion

Shortly after the opening, the city of Dresden criticized the fact that the shopping center was built 952 m² larger than the 75,000 m² agreed in the contract. At that time, the case was initially closed because it was irrelevant. In May 2012, however, it became known that the area in question is around 3000 m² according to new estimates. The client, Kurt Krieger, is accused of not specifying, among other things, checkout areas, wall shelves, changing rooms and escalators in the construction documents as sales areas. The construction company, on the other hand, sees imprecise legal requirements for sales areas. The city then commissioned an expert to provide an appraisal to determine the exact size of the overbuilt area, and initiated a fine against the client. On April 23, 2013 it was announced that the appraisal revealed an excess of 6113 m². Now the client is threatened with a fine of up to € 500,000. The city states that it will not discontinue the proceedings even if a fine is paid. In order to restore the contractually agreed condition, there is now a threat of dismantling the excess space, vacant shops are no longer allowed to be re-let, and the client has already been asked to present a dismantling concept.

Transport links

70% of the Elbepark mainly attracts customers from the surrounding area and neighboring countries. The shopping center is located directly at the exit Dresden-Neustadt the Bundesautobahn 4 . The Elbepark can be reached by public transport using bus lines 64, 70, 72, 80 of the Dresden public transport company . In addition, a tram line was opened in November 2003, on which tram line 9 has served the shopping center since November 2004 . At the weekend and at night, tram line 13 also goes to Elbepark. The Dresden-Trachau S-Bahn station is around 15 minutes' walk away, and the S1 S-Bahn line every half hour to Meissen via Radebeul and to Bad Schandau or Schöna via Dresden-Neustadt , Dresden Hauptbahnhof , Heidenau, Pirna, Königstein moves.
