Panayis Vagliano
Panayis Athanase Vagliano ( Greek Παναγής Αθανασίου Βαλλιάνος Panagis Athanasiou Vallianos , * 1814 in Keramies, Kefalonia ; † 1902 ) was a Greek shipowner and patron .
Life
Panayis followed his brothers Marinos and Andreas to Russia , where they founded the Vagliano Bros. shipping company during the Crimean War and were also active in the wheat trade. After the war, the business had lost margins and Panayis moved to London , from where he kept in contact with his brothers in Russia, but from now on ran his own shipping company.
Panayis Vagliano died in London in 1902, where he was buried in a mausoleum that is modeled on the Tower of the Winds in Athens and is now a Grade II listed building. He donated all of his fortune to the Greek state, a large part of which was spent on the Greek National Library .
The sculptor Georgios Bonanos created a statue of Vagliano that was placed in front of the National Library.
