The Strofades ( Greek Στροφάδες ( f. Pl. )) Are two small rocky islands in the Ionian Sea . These are the northern, smaller island of Arpyia (Άρπυια 0.176 km²) and Stamfani (Σταμφάνη 1.18 km²) or Megalo Strofadi (Μεγάλο Στροφάδι), which is located to the south. They are 45.5 km from Zakynthos and 50.3 km from the Peloponnese and belong to the territory of the municipality of Zakynthos. The islands are both very flat and covered with thick vegetation. The highest point is only 20 meters above sea level. There are no sandy beaches on the two islands. The islands are known throughout Greece for their natural beauties. The 2011 census shows that the monastery on Stamfani still has a real resident.
history
The islands were inhabited for many years by monks who appreciated fertility. They cultivated all kinds of citrus fruits on the Strofades. The monastery of the Holy Mother of God dates back to 1200 and can still be seen on the islands today. Since the islands are a popular stopover for more than 1200 bird species on their way to and from Africa , the Greek government is planning to set up a marine nature reserve here.
The islands are now part of the Marine National Park Zakynthos and they are not allowed to be entered during the protection period. This is monitored and executed by the coast guard and the administration of the national park on site.
