Daskalio ( Greek Δασκαλειό ( n. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ ðaskaˈljɔ ]) is a small island in the Strait of Ithaca, around 750 meters from the east coast of Kefalonia . It belongs to the municipality of Erisos in the municipality of Kefalonia . In ancient times the island was called Asteris ( ancient Greek Ἀστερίς ) and was identified with an island with two ports mentioned in Homer's Odyssey , on which Penelope's suitors lay in wait for Telemachus, who was coming from Pylos . This thesis has been contested variously, including by Wilhelm Dörpfeld , who equated Homer's Ithaca with today's Lefkada and who thought Arkoudi was the asteris in question. Proponents of the theory that Daskalio is the said island have referred to the two natural harbors of Fiskardo on Kefalonia north of the island, which correspond to those mentioned by Homer.
On the uninhabited island there is a small chapel of St. Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos), the remains of an older one, the masonry of a tower from which the Strait of Ithaca could be controlled, and stone remains from ancient buildings.
