Fiskardo , ( Greek Φισκάρδο ( n. Sg. )) Is a local community around the port of the same name with (2011) 189 inhabitants in the north of the Ionian island of Kefalonia . Administratively, the place belongs to the municipality of Erisos of the municipality of Kefalonia .

Like the whole of the north of the island, the village was largely spared from the 1953 earthquake. Due to the historical structure and the small port, it developed into a tourist attraction early on.

history

In ancient times the place founded in 13 AD was called Panormos (Πάνορμος), in the 11th century it was settled by Normans, who named it after their king Robert Guiscard , who died on the nearby beach of Porto Atheras .

On nautical maps of the Venetians, who ruled Kefalonia for a long time, the place is referred to as Porto di Custodi (Port of the Guardians), Petiglia , Veneti Victi , Panormos and Dulichio or in Greek Δολίχιον (Dolichion). It is assumed that since the 13th century the name Fiskardo was in use among the locals in different variants (Guisgardo, Pescarda, Viscardo, Piscardo and others).

Around 1700, the place developed into the port of the Erissos peninsula and the transshipment point for Ithaca . The poet Nikos Kavvadias, born in the Chinese city of Harbin, comes from Fiskardo .

Since the 1960s, the port became a pedestrian zone; traditional kafenions and bars for fishermen and sailors have been converted into restaurants. The best-known example is that of the cook Tassia, who turned her parents ’restaurant into a meeting place for gourmets. Celebrities like Naomi Campbell , Madonna and Nicolas Cage have also been guests here.

Due to the high prices of the real estate, the previous residents from Fiskardo moved to the surrounding villages and were able to use or sell their previous houses commercially, only a few dozen are still living here permanently. With the territorial reform in 1997, the rural community of Fiskardo was merged with twelve others in the north of the island to form the municipality of Erisos and also benefited from the increase in population on Kefalonia.

In recent years there have been many complaints about excessive prices (not least due to the high demand and the short season). Guests preferred other destinations on Kefalonia, such as the port of Asos . Today the prices of the restaurants are moderate, attempts are generally being made to counteract further commercialization of the place, so no new buildings are approved and the place remains closed to motorized traffic.

Attractions

In addition to the port, in Fiskardo there are:

  • the small marine museum, supervised by volunteers from all over Europe
  • the lighthouse
  • and the Norman Church (ruin, north of the harbor bay)
