Uniklubi are a Finnish rock band from Tampere , founded in 1999 as Pincenez (French for "strapless glasses ") in Hämeenkyrö . The members have known each other since their school days. The band had their breakthrough with the hit Rakkautta ja Piikkilankaa (2004). Her style is melodic rock, her Finnish lyrics are particularly striking . The band abandoned their founding name very early due to poor feedback and gave themselves their current name, which translated means “dream club”.
Band history
The band was founded in 1999. The name Uniklubi didn't even exist at that time. The band was called "Pincenez", which translates as "strapless glasses". The band renamed themselves, however, because the name Pincenez got too bad feedback. Since the band sings in Finnish and comes from Finland, it was obvious to choose a Finnish name and so the name “Uniklubi”, which means “dream club”, was born.
The band earned the money for the first demo recordings by giving their first appearances and using the proceeds from ticket sales to go to the studio. The first songs the band played were in English and cover versions. But the band also realized relatively quickly that they could very well write and play their own songs and started doing so quickly. They switched from the English language to their mother tongue, Finnish.
When recording the album Rakkautta ja piikkilankaa (“Love and Barbed Wire”), however, the then drummer Jimmy Drain (bourgeois Jaakko Järvensivu , the older brother of Lovex drummer Julian) left the band. As a replacement, Antti Matikainen came to Uniklubi, which has been an integral part of the band ever since.
The first single from the album was Rakkautta ja piikkilankaa and was voted the most popular track of the year by YleX. The album made the jump into the top 5 and placed directly at number 4. The first important award soon followed: You won an Emma Award for best newcomer of the year. Rakkautta ja piikkilankaa achieved gold status in Finland (15,000 albums sold). Further singles from the album were: Kylmää ("Cold"), Näiden tähtien alla ("Under these stars") and Totuus ("The Truth").
The second album Kehä ("Kreis") was released on February 2, 2005 and entered the Finnish charts at number 1. In 2006 it was awarded platinum . It stayed in the Top20 for over 20 weeks and the first single Kaikki mitä mä annoin (“Everything I gave”) made it to first place in the charts. The second single Kiertää kehää ("In a circle") got in 10th place.
In late summer and autumn 2006 the band had to take a break. Singer Jussi Selo had considerable problems singing due to a knot on his vocal cords and had to undergo an operation in September 2006 because he was increasingly restricted and sometimes simply toneless. In December of the same year, however, the band played their first concerts again.
The new single Vnus hit the radio on May 7, 2007 and has been available in stores since May 30. As the B-side, the single contains the song Aurinkoni ("My Sun") not included on the later released album Luotisade ("Kugelregen "). Vnus was the first release from the third album Luotisade , released on August 22nd of the same year . This was eagerly awaited, especially in view of the vocal cord operation by singer Jussi Selo, as concerns had arisen as to whether the operation might have affected or even damaged his voice. But these concerns quickly dissipated, fans and the rest of the band were thrilled. Bassist Teemu Rajamäki comments: "Jussi's voice sounds better today than ever before."
After Vnus a video was released in the summer of 2007 to Luotisade , the song itself was not released as a single.
After several postponements, another release from the album Luotisade was released on December 12, 2007 , namely the title Varjoon juuttunut . A cover of the song Koko talvi kesämökillä by the Finnish group Leevi and the Leavings was released as the B-side on the single . In addition, a limited edition of the single was released, in which the booklets each have the signature of a band member.
On September 17th, 2008 Uniklubi released their first compilation album Kaikki Mitä Mä Annoin 2003-2008 . In addition to a selection of tracks from the previous three albums, the CD contains two completely new tracks, the promo single Rakkaudesta Hulluuteen and Liian Lähellä released on August 4, 2008 . The limited edition also includes a DVD on which all previous music videos from Uniklubi and a documentation about the band can be found.
In October 2008 the band announced that they would have to cancel all concerts planned for the current year. The reason for this was again given by front man Jussi Selo's voice problems. The recordings for a fourth studio album were not affected, according to the band.
In November 2008 the band released the 208 page Rakkaudesta hulluuteen Photobook .
The single Polje was released on January 12, 2009, a pre-release from the band's fourth studio album, Syvään valoon, due to be released on March 4 . Almost at the same time, a one-month concert break was announced, which is the result of another vocal cord operation by frontman Jussi Selo. The single reached number 9 in the Finnish single charts.
Syvään valoon , by the way the first studio album with the new label Sony Music Finland , was released on March 4th, 2009. The album reached number 3 in the Finnish charts. The release was followed by first appearances in which front man Jussi Selo brought his completely recovered voice to be heard.
Song Kukka's second single was released digitally on April 20, 2009 , and the video followed on April 23.
On August 26th, 2009 the EP Mitä vittua? (for example: “What the hell?”), which, in addition to the song of the same name from the album Syvään valoon, also includes two previously unreleased songs and live recordings of the songs Vnus and Kiinni jään . The EP made it to number 6 in the Finnish single charts.
After a tour through Finland, the band's next album has already been announced for 2010. The single Aikasi on nyt (“Your time is now”) was released on July 30th, 2010, followed by the album Kultakalat (“Goldfische”) on September 22nd of the same year . Was produced Kultakalat by Jyrki Tuovinen, who previously u. a. had worked with bands like Lordi or Apulanta . A tour for the album, which reached number 7 in the Finnish charts, was announced for spring 2011. Aikasi on nyt did not make it into the Finnish charts, but was in the top positions in the listener charts of the radio station YleX for several weeks.
In October 2010, a music video for Maailma puhaltaa was also shot and published. Over a hundred extras can be seen in some of the street scenes filmed in Tampere. In 2011 the band took what they called a creative break, during which the members devoted themselves to their own side projects. Drummer Antti Matikainen and bassist Teemu Rajamäki formed the band Jupiter together with Negative bassist Antti Anatomy , Jussi Selo worked on a project called Jussi Selo & Nefernefernefer .
On March 19, 2012, bassist Teemu Rajamäki announced his departure via the band's website.
