Jussi Petteri Selo (born January 21, 1985 in Vantaa ) is a Finnish rock musician , singer and one of the songwriters of the rock band Uniklubi, which was founded in 1999 .

Life

Jussi Petteri Selo was born on January 21, 1985 as the second youngest of four brothers in Vantaa . When Jussi was five years old, his family moved to Hämeenkyrö near Tampere . There he got to know his future bandmates from Uniklubi at school. Today he lives in Tampere.

His birth name was Jussi Kykkänen. Like his older brother Janne (guitarist at Uniklubi), however, he took his mother's maiden name Selo a few years ago .

He played soccer with Apassit Hämeenkyrö until he was sixteen, but gave up because Apassit only offered youth teams up to the age of 16. Today he plays in the third division team Dog's Ball together with other rock musicians from Tampere.

According to his own statements, Jussi came to music mainly through the influence of his brother Janne, who was five years older than him, but only decided late to try it as a singer. Before that he played drums in a band called Roni ja ryövärit and worked as a technician in various other bands. He can also play guitar , keyboard and saxophone and writes the songs for Uniklubi together with Teemu Rajamäki. In some songs he processes a stroke of fate from 2003, when he lost his oldest brother Tommi, who was then 26, at the age of 18. As a result, many of the songs are quite sad and emotional, especially on the second Uniklubi album Kehä , this becomes clear, for example in Huomenna he sings the following words: "Huomenna, taas huomenna olen surullinen" (German: And tomorrow, tomorrow I will mourn again) .

Jussi was a singer in the founding line-up of Lovex 2001. There he quit because the band wanted to sing in English, but in his opinion Jussi does not speak this language very well. He has been a member of Uniklubi since 1999.

At the beginning of his career, Jussi Selo took a trip into the acting world, he played the role of Kristian in the Finnish teen love drama Perhoshäkki .

In September 2006 the singer had to undergo an operation because a knot had formed on his vocal cords, which severely restricted him while singing and in some cases meant that he could no longer get any sound at all.

In October 2008 he announced that he had problems with his voice again, this time due to trauma to the vocal cords. Uniklubi took a concert break , but Jussi sang all of the songs on Uniklubi's fourth studio album Syvään valoon regardless of his voice problems . On January 14th, 2009 the band announced on MySpace that they would have to cancel concerts again because Selo had to undergo another vocal cord operation on January 13th. After the release of Syvään valoon , Jussi demonstrated in various appearances that his voice has completely recovered.

In the summer of 2010 he and his band Uniklubi performed several times with the Romantiikan Rippeet , a string quartet that was expanded to include a piano .

During a "creative break" from Uniklubi in 2011, Selo worked on the Jussi Selo & Nefernefernefer project , with which he released the singles Nefernefernefer and Viimeiseen hengenvetoon and, in early 2012, a self-titled album.
