Ethanolic tincture of iodine

Iodine tincture (Tinctura Iodi) is a solution of iodine in 10 parts of alcohol . The tincture will turn sour over time because hydriodic acid is formed.

The colorless tincture of iodine (Tinctura Iodi decolorata) is a solution of 10 parts of iodine and 10 parts of sodium thiosulfate in 10 parts of water, 16 parts of alcoholic ammonia solution and 75 parts of ethanol. Both preparations were used medicinally. Before surgical interventions, they should disinfect the skin in the vicinity of the operation quickly and reliably. Smaller wounds can also be disinfected in this way.

Iodine can cause severe allergic reactions . The alcohol in the tincture causes a very uncomfortable burning sensation in the wound. By the 1960s at the latest, both preparations have been obsolete and have been replaced by better ones (e.g. povidone iodine ).
