The FC Dinamo Tbilisi ( Georgian დინამო თბილისი / Dinamo Tbilisi ; Russian ФК Динамо Тбилиси ) is a football club from Tbilisi , the capital of Georgia . It was officially founded in 1925 and was one of the most successful clubs in the Soviet Union with two championship titles . Since Georgia's independence, Dinamo Tiflis has also been the country's most successful club with 16 Georgian championship titles.

The club can also point to some successes at the international level, such as winning the 1980/81 European Cup Winners' Cup , winning the CIS Cup in 2004 and participating in several UEFA Europa League competitions .

Soviet Union

The association was founded in autumn 1925. At that time the sport of football also grew in popularity in the Soviet Union. Since there was no regular game operation in the early days of the club, friendlies were mainly played at first. The first game of the Tbilisi took place on January 26, 1926, when they faced Dinamo Baku and lost 1-0. In 1927 Dinamo Tbilisi opened a youth team. The earliest Dinamo players included Shota Savgulidze , Mikhail Minaev and Vladimir Berdsenishvili .

In 1936 the Soviet Union introduced an organized league system for football. Despite numerous local successes, Dinamo Tbilisi was initially only rated for the second highest Soviet league. The first season took place in the form of a spring and an autumn championship. After they became champions of the second division in the spring, the promotion to Gruppa A , as the highest Soviet league was called at that time, could be celebrated. In the autumn championship of 1936 they took third place. From 1937 the championship was held annually and the number of teams increased.

In 1940 the club became Soviet runners-up, and in 1941 they came third. Due to the Second World War , regular gaming could only take place again from 1945.

It was the only Georgian club that could ever win this title. In 1990, Georgia declared itself independent and the Georgian Football Association subsequently refused to take part in Soviet competitions. In the new national league of Georgia, Dinamo Tbilisi is the current record champion. From 1990 to 1999 the club dominated the Georgian league almost completely and won the championship title every year.
