Kachi Assatiani ( Georgian კახი ასათიანი ; Russian Кахи Шалвович Асатиани / Kachi Schalwowitsch Assatiani known; born January 1, 1947 in Telavi , † November 20, 2002 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet - Georgian football player , coach, politician and manager.
The long-time player from Dinamo Tbilisi took part with the Soviet national football team in the European Championship in 1968 and the World Cup in 1970 . At the opening game of the 1970 World Cup, he was the first football player in history to see the yellow card , which was used for the first time during the tournament.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Assatiani was one of the best strikers in Soviet football. In 1973, he was seriously injured in a championship game and never got back into shape, so that he had to stop playing at the age of 28. In total, he played 16 times for the Sbornaja and scored six goals. After his active career, he was coach from 1978 to 1982 and sports director of Dinamo Tbilisi in 1987.
From 1990 to 2000 Assatiani was President of the Georgian Sports Federation. After briefly serving as Georgian Minister of Sport and Tourism in the 1990s, he became Vice President of the largest Georgian airline Airzena (today's name Georgian Airways ), which he remained until his death. Assatiani was shot dead on the street in Tbilisi on the evening of November 20, 2002. The perpetrators could not be identified.
