history

Due to the population growth in the community of Stammersdorf and Strebersdorf, a new cemetery was built on the site of an old vineyard in 1833 at the expense of the two communities. The inauguration took place on December 1, 1833 by the abbot of the Schottenstift Sigismund Schultes. The old cemetery around the parish church was leveled in 1847 and planted with trees. The new cemetery was expanded in 1878, 1913/14 and 1920. Non-Catholics, suicides and unbaptized children were buried in a separate area in the old part of the cemetery.

After the Second World War, the buildings and infrastructure of the cemetery were restored. Further renovation measures took place in the 1950s. Since the cemetery was in the middle of a residential area and was very small, the allocation of new and abandoned graves was prohibited in 1952 . In 1953, the municipal council decided to close the cemetery and other cemeteries until 1975. From 1957 to 1965, the allocation of new and abandoned graves was allowed at short notice, but the right of use was to expire in 1975. However, the closure of the cemeteries was postponed for ten years in 1975 and repealed by a referendum in 1980 .
