Rudolf Viertl , (born November 12, 1902 in Schwechat , Austria-Hungary , † December 9, 1981 in Vienna ) was an Austrian football player who won the Mitropacup twice with Austria and took part in the 1934 World Cup with the national team .

Club career

Viertl joined the SK Neukettenhof at the age of 14 and switched to the first-class 1. Simmeringer SC in 1924 , where the left winger was able to secure a regular place immediately. For the next four years he played in a row next to the national players Johann Horvath and Leopold Danis and in 1926 was able to achieve the best placement in the club's history with third place. Two years later, the Simmeringer had to relegate bottom of the table and Viertl left the club to join Austria.

The striker, who was better known for his speed and shooting power than his technique, also quickly fitted into the attack of the Violets led by Matthias Sindelar and took third place in the list of goalscorers in 1930. At that time Austria could not play for the championship title and found itself regularly in the middle of the table. In 1933, however, a title could be won with the ÖFB Cup , which also entitles them to participate in the Mitropacup . Here the Viennese reached the final after victories against Slavia Prague and Juventus Turin , where Ambrosiana Inter Milan could be defeated 3-1 after a 1: 2 away defeat .

After two more cup titles, Austria managed to repeat its greatest international success when in 1936, after victories against AGC Bologna , Slavia Prague and Újpest FC , the final of the Mitropacup was reached again. Opponents this time were the Prague Sparta and an away goal from Camillo Jerusalem won the title. Rudolf Viertl was one of five Austrians who took part in both finals. He stayed with the Violets until 1939 and then moved to Germania Schwechat in his hometown at the end of his career .

National team

Viertl made his debut for the national team in September 1925 against the Hungarians . After that, however, he had to wait four years before he was called up again, but after two games against Czechoslovakia there was again a three-year break, so that Viertl had no missions during the time of the wonder team . Although he was in the B national team and in the Viennese city selection at that time, the left wing in the national team was permanently occupied by Adolf Vogl .

He was only allowed to run for his country again in October 1933 and this time he came to regular missions. For example, he was in the 2-2 in Glasgow when a continental European national team remained undefeated on British soil for the first time and he was also part of the Austrian squad for the 1934 World Cup, where he was used in all four games and in the semi-finals against the Italians failed. In 1936 he was part of the victorious team that defeated England 2-1 in Vienna and also contributed a goal. He played his last game in 1937 against France . In total, he came to 16 missions and scored four goals.
