Günther Baumgärtel

Günther Baumgärtel (born May 2, 1929 in Hagen ; † July 19, 2007 there ) was a German football referee .

The trained businessman Baumgärtel began his referee career in 1948. In 1953 he led his first game in the Oberliga West , the top division of German football at the time, with the encounter between Rot-Weiss Essen and Bayer 04 Leverkusen . When the Bundesliga was founded , he was a referee, and from 1963 to 1967 he headed a total of 34 Bundesliga games. Baumgärtel was a FIFA referee between 1961 and 1967 in 2 senior international matches and 37 European cup matches. In 1967 he ended his referee career for professional reasons.

In 1973 he became a referee instructor for the Hagen football district and in 1975 he became a referee instructor at the Westphalian Football and Athletics Association . There he was until the end, for more than 30 years, a well-known and valued authority far beyond the boundaries of his specialist area. As a co-founder of the online newsletter Richter-Aktuell , he embarked on a new path together with his colleague Karsten Jonsson . Since December 21, 2005 the "Current News for Referees in the FLVW", which reports news from Westphalia , has been published regularly .

He passed on his wealth of experience not only in the FLVW, but also in the teaching staff of the DFB , to which he was appointed in 1981, and as a member of the referee committee of the regional association WFLV .

In addition, Baumgärtel was the relay leader of the national soccer league for 15 years and general manager of his club SSV Hagen for 20 years .
