Career

Until December 31, 1957, the half-forward was active in the World Cup system at that time in the Cologne amateur area at the district club SSV Vogelsang. Then he moved in January 1958 to the amateur division of 1. FC Cologne, where he played in the contract reserve. For the round 1959/60 Ripkens rose to the contract players team of the "billy goat-Elf". In the summer of 1960 he signed his contract player contract. The striker played for 1. FC Köln for five years . He made his debut on the last round matchday, April 24, 1960, in the 2: 3 defeat at VfL Bochum in the football Oberliga West . He and Helmut Rahn formed the right wing of the western champion. In the final round of the German football championship , he came to three missions. In the final on June 25th against Hamburger SV, however, he was on the bench in the 2-3 defeat. Until the end of the old first-class Oberliga era, 1962/63, the technician and combination footballer was involved in four championship titles of 1. FC Cologne in the Oberliga West. When the German championship was brought to Cologne in 1962, Ripkens was not used in the final round. On June 29, 1963, however, he was in the team of the defending champion, who lost the final with 1: 3 goals against their western rivals Borussia Dortmund. A total of 44 games with eight goals are noted for Ripkens from 1960 to 1963 in the Oberliga West; there are also 14 appearances with one goal in the final round.

When the 1st Bundesliga started in 1963/64, however, he was only used once under coach Georg Knöpfle . The half-forward positions of the first Bundesliga champions were occupied by Hans Schäfer and Wolfgang Overath . In 1962 and 1964 he became German champions with the Cologne team . At the end of the first Bundesliga season, he left the club. In Belgium he was runner- up with Standard Liège behind RSC Anderlecht and then moved back to Germany after only one season. There he went to the Regionalliga West - which was the second highest German division at the time - to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In this league he played from 1967 for SC Viktoria Köln and since 1969 for SC Fortuna Köln . From 1965 to 1970 Ripkens completed 115 regional league games and scored 24 goals before ending his higher-class career.

With the city selection Cologne (1960/61) and 1. FC Cologne (1961-64), Ripkens had made five international appearances with one goal in the Messestädte-Pokal . Opponents were AS Roma, Inter Milan and La Gantoise Gent.
