Cathay Dragon ( Chinese 國泰 港龍 航空 / 国泰 港龙 航空 ), formerly Dragonair ( 港龍 航空 / 港龙 航空 ), is a Chinese airline based in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and based at Hong Kong International Airport . It is a subsidiary of Cathay Pacific and thus a member of the airline alliance Oneworld Alliance .
history
Cathay Dragon was founded in May 1985 on the initiative of KP Chao, now the airline's honorary president, under the name Hong Kong Dragon Airlines and started its services in July 1985 with a Boeing 737 from Hong Kong 's Kai Tak Airport to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia . In 1986 the airline was renamed Dragonair and got the licenses for flight operations in China and for a scheduled flight to Phuket . In 1987 the airline started charter flights in China, and in that year it became a member of IATA .
In January 1990, Cathay Pacific and the Swire Group acquired 35% of the shares in KP Chao and CITIC took 38%. In 1993 the first Airbus A320-200 was taken over, followed by several A330-300s . The purchase of 35.86% of the shares from the China National Avitation Corporation (CNAC) brought about a redistribution of power . It was thus the largest shareholder and later expanded its stake to 43.29%.
On June 9, 2006, Cathay Pacific took over all shares in Dragonair for the equivalent of 1.06 billion US dollars . Accordingly, Dragonair kept its name for the next six years. This deal helped Cathay Pacific to expand its route network in China.
On 1 November 2007. Dragonair was the parent company of Cathay Pacific member of the airline alliance Oneworld Alliance .
At the beginning of 2016 it was decided to change the name from Dragonair to Cathay Dragon in order to demonstrate the proximity to the parent company Cathay Pacific. The aircraft paintings will be adapted to the new brand identity from April 2016.
