Flight West Airlines was founded by Sir Dennis Buchanan in May 1987 to provide subsidized passenger services to remote communities on behalf of the Queensland government.

Initially, the airline Beechcraft deployed Super King Air aircraft for these services from a location in Brisbane and then quickly expanded by adding de Havilland Canada DHC-6 and an Embraer EMB 110 to its fleet . A second base was established in Cairns. Soon they operated the most extensive route network in all of Queensland.

From bases in Brisbane , Townsville, and Cairns , it served major cities and small regional communities across the state, including communities on the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait, major coastal cities and islands, and cities in western Queensland .

The airline was affiliated with (but independently from) Ansett Australia Airlines, which ceased operations on September 14, 2001. Before the airline went into liquidation in June 2001, Flight West served 34 destinations and employed over 420 people.
