AirAsia X (actually AirAsia X Sdn. Bhd ) is a Malaysian low-cost airline based in Sepang and based at Kuala Lumpur Airport . It only offers long-haul flights and is 16% owned by the Virgin Group and AirAsia .
history
AirAsia X's predecessor is FlyAsianXpress, a regional airline based in Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia. It operated a regional route network as part of since 1 August 2006 Rural Air Service (about Rural Air Transport Service ) to destinations in East Malaysia that were not served by Malaysian Airlines. The flights were operated as a subcontractor to AirAsia. Due to constant problems with service, punctuality and customer information, the Rural Air Service was transferred to the Malaysia Airlines subsidiary Firefly on April 26, 2007 . Malaysia Airlines again transferred the Rural Air Service to their newly founded company MASwings on August 1, 2007 . After the handover, the name was changed from FlyAsianXpress to AirAsia X.
On May 17, 2007, Tony Fernandes, co-owner and CEO of AirAsia, announced plans for a flight from Malaysia to Australia with AirAsia X. Because of the high airport charges, Sydney should not be considered, but inexpensive alternatives such as Melbourne Avalon Airport, Newcastle, Adelaide and Gold Coast. To expedite the flight connection, Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group acquired a 20% stake in AirASia X with the intention of developing joint code- sharing and a frequent flyer program . Flight operations began on November 2, 2007 with the Kuala Lumpur to Gold Coast connection .
As of February 14, 2008, AirAsia X is 48% owned by Aero Ventures (a company owned by Tony Fernandes and a number of business associates), Virgin Group (16%) and AirAsia (16%). The remaining 20% are owned by the Manara Consortium from Bahrain and the Orix Group from Japan . AirAsia X has a license from AirAsia for the use of the trade name. Both companies share a website for flight bookings and reservations, corporate design, uniforms, etc. In addition, AirAsia X is supported by the Virgin Group in terms of management, expertise and infrastructure.
On July 15, 2014, AirAsia X ordered 50 Airbus A330-900neo at Farnborough International Airshow . AirAsia X is therefore the aircraft's first customer.
