Location of the former place Velau in the Rhenish lignite district

Velau was the oldest part of Hehlrath , a north-western district of Eschweiler in North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1950, Velau was the first to give way to the brown coal opencast mine of the future . Around 300 people had to leave the place.

The former "Kirchstrasse", renamed "Velauer Strasse" on October 18, 1972, connected Velau with Hehlrath. Klapperstraße also led to the district of Velau . It was named in memory of the former leprosy and infirmary from the 17th century east of Hehlrath. The lepers had to draw attention to approaching people by clattering wood in order to avoid infection.

The name means swampy bush forest, swamp or heather or cattle meadow.
