The Church of St. Cäcilia is a Roman Catholic church in Hehlrath , a district of Eschweiler in the Aachen region . It is a listed building . The community belongs to the community of communities (GdG) Eschweiler-Nord in the diocese of Aachen . The patron saints are Saint Cecilia and Saint Thekla .

history

The Helrode family is considered to have donated a previous chapel with a bell tower and bells. The bells can be seen today in the bell department of the Westphalian State Museum in Münster. Until 1506, when the altar of this first chapel was consecrated by the Cologne auxiliary bishop Theoderich , the Hehlrathers had to attend the service in wages . In 1787 the dilapidated church was torn down and replaced by a new church, the main nave of which is still standing today. In the following year, Hehlrath was raised to the status of an independent parish with the patrons Cäcilia and Thekla. In 1831 the construction of a school house began, which was not completed. In 1932 the church was extended by the porch and on February 2, 1985 the parish hall was inaugurated.

Construction and equipment

The church is an approximately east -facing hall church made of brick masonry with a barrel vault , a transept and an apse with a straight end. On the west side it has a massive square church tower made of field stones with a pointed hexagonal helmet .

The baroque high altar from the 17th century came from the Aldenhoven Capuchin monastery, which was dissolved in 1802 as a result of secularization , and shows the Assumption of Mary into heaven and her coronation . A surviving tuba-blowing court angel used to belong to the baroque pulpit ; Today it is attached to the left pillar between the transept and the apse. The organ of the church also has a baroque front .

In the years 1975–1976 the church received nine new windows, designed by Wilhelm Buschulte , and from 1978 to 1981 a newly designed choir room , with which the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council was taken into account. The entrance portal, altar, ambo , sedile and the Easter candlestick were created in modern design between 1978 and 2001 by the sculptor Bonifatius Stirnberg .
