history

The place Röthgen originally belonged to the Eschweiler parish of St. Peter and Paul . In the second half of the 19th century, the building of its own Röthgen church became necessary due to the rapid population growth caused by the Eschweiler mining . In the Volksbote on June 18, 1892, a provisional committee called for a church to be built as follows : On Sunday, June 19, ¼ before 5 a.m., the citizens are invited to Mr. Franz Esser's premises to discuss the establishment of a chapel congregation in Röthgen invited. More than 200 people appeared and the constituent meeting of the Church Building Association (KBV) then took place on December 10, 1892. Property negotiations began with the Röthgener Bourscheidt family , which were successfully concluded in 1894.

With the fencing of the church building site on March 2, 1899, the first step towards the start of construction was completed. In the following years, the church building association sought to found a GmbH . In the end, however, a decision was made in favor of a registered association , which was entered in the register of associations of the Royal District Court of Eschweiler in March 1904 . The construction costs of over 123,000 marks were raised through donations and a loan .

On December 9, 1903, the church building association decided in favor of the plans by the architect Johann Adam Rüppel from Bonn . The architect Lenzen from Bedburg became the site manager . Rüppel staked out the foundations on May 19, 1904 on the church building site. The foundation stone was laid on May 14, 1905. In the same year, the construction of a tower was prohibited by the local building police due to “insufficient foundations”.

On October 30, 1906, the solemn inauguration and consecration took place, and on January 7, 1908 St. Mary was raised to an independent parish. The first pastor was the previous rector Josef Kreuer (born December 12, 1872 in Düren ). The consecration of the church took place on 27 September 1911 by the Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Dr. Müller .

In 1912 the pastorate, the chaplaincy and the sexton and organist apartment on Karlstrasse were ready for occupancy.

The Marian column in front of the church was consecrated on March 25, 1957.

It is the parish church of the Catholic parish "Heilig Geist", which was formed in 2010 from five former parishes in the southern urban area of Eschweiler. The parish churches in Hastenrath (Eschweiler) , Bergrath (Eschweiler) , Nothberg and Pump-Stich belong to the parish .

The most famous pastor from 1947 until his death was Wilhelm Zohren (* January 7, 1900 in Venlo , † July 10, 1968 in Eschweiler ), after whom the Pastor-Zohren-House in Röthgen is named.
