Church of St. Boniface

The Catholic parish church of St. Bonifatius is located in the Eschweiler district of Dürwiß in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen .

history

The Aachen-Frankfurter Heerstrasse, which came from Hehlrath via Dürwiss to Weisweiler and Düren, existed in the 9th century . There was an inn with a chapel on this street, which was under the Eschweiler parish church until 1694 . In addition to this guesthouse chapel, Dürwiß also owned the “Broicher Hof” chapel, which was then expanded and converted into a parish church and was first mentioned in 1449 .

After the tower was rebuilt around 1600, it received its "parish letter" half a century later, and it was separated from the mother church in Eschweiler. Then, depending on the steady increase in the population, the parish church was enlarged and rebuilt. This church stood until November 1944. Probably the richest work of art was the baroque organ from the 17th century , which also went down when it was destroyed.

On August 20, 1949, the foundation stone for the new Bonifatius Church was laid. According to the plans of the Aachen architect Dipl.-Ing. Hubert Hermann the new church was built. In 1980 the entire chancel was adapted to the requirements of a prompt service and completely redesigned. In 1988, major restoration work became necessary. The new colored design of the interior gives the parish church a friendly, festive character.

In 2006, significant damage to the roof structure was noticed and the church was immediately closed. The cause was material fatigue, as there were no high-quality building materials available immediately after the Second World War . The erection of support scaffolding ensured that the service could continue, especially at Christmas. In spring 2007 the church was closed again for further renovation measures. The roof was renewed, a new attic was dispensed with, the interior of the church has been redesigned; The altar and ambo have been replaced, with the relics now embedded in the floor under the altar. Meanwhile, the services were celebrated in the Bonifatius Forum , the parish hall. The parish church reopened at Easter 2008, and since then there has been an addition under the foundation stone with the inscription 2008 .

The parish of St. Bonifatius has been running its own website since the end of 2017:

The St. Sebastianus Rifle Brotherhood belongs to St. Bonifatius .
