The Broicher Hof is a former knight's seat in the Eschweiler district of Dürwiß , which was owned by the von Broich family for centuries . In 1434 the von Broich family is first mentioned as the owner of the farm, which was previously (partly still today) called the 'Dürwisser Hof' or 'Der Hofe zu Wyß' or 'Duyrewyß'. The name 'Dürwiß' is probably derived from Dornenwiese.

The von Broich family is an ancient Rhenish noble family with many possessions in the region and high offices in and around Aachen and Jülich .

owner

In 1434 Adam von Broich was enfeoffed with the Vogtei zu Broich (Broichweiden) and various goods, namely to Pattern (near Aldenhoven), to Wyß (Dürwiß), to Roide (Röhe) and to Vrankenhoven. The farm at "Wyß" came from the property of his mother, the sister of Johann von Werth (Johan van Werde called Wyß), who is still mentioned as the farm owner in 1449 but is inherited around 1450 by his nephews Adam and Wilhelm von Broich and theirs Stepbrother Simon von Bergrath, the son of Reinhard von Bergrath, who was enfeoffed with the Dürwisser Gut in 1402, stepfather of the von Broich brothers. According to his coat of arms, the childless Johann van Werde called Wyß (he also owned a farm in Werth south of Eschweiler) belonged to the same family as von Wyß called Schobbendorp, owner of the estate later called Drimborner Hof across from Broicher Hof in Dürwiß.

court

The manor house with a corner tower is the only remaining building in the former courtyard. Up until the Second World War , there was also a courtyard with farm buildings attached to the manor house. During the Second World War, the manor house was badly damaged and the farm buildings were completely destroyed.

The Dürwisser Hof (Broicher Hof) belonged to the feudal courts of the Aldenhovener Mannkammer in the 15th century .

On August 11, 1677, according to a lawyer’s power of attorney, the Broich property was divided. The court of Wyß was awarded to the older son Maximilian von Broich. The last feudal bearer of the Broich court was the electoral Cologne chamberlain Carl Phillipp Freiherr von Broich. Later owners: Stürtz, Delhougne and since 1890 widow Heinrich Schmitz, married couple Josef Kerres (1927), BIAG Zukunft in 1941 and sold to the farmer Bohr in the same year. After the Second World War, the damage was so severe that it was impossible to continue using the farm as a farmyard. In 1951 the municipality of Dürwiß acquired the ruins, which were rebuilt with the help of the state. A kindergarten and a few houses were later built on the land surrounding the farm. Apartments were initially set up in the courtyard; Later, the workers' welfare organization moved into the house and the Eschweiler Forestry Office was located in the building until the beginning of 2008 .

coat of arms

Coat of arms stone from 1727

The coat of arms that can be seen today above the front door of the Broicher Hof represents the alliance coat of arms of Johann Werner von Broich (near Jülich ) and his wife Richmund Anna Margarethe von Siegen zu Sechtem and Broich near Jülich. The bar in the middle of the shield The coat of arms of those of Broich can still be seen in the coat of arms of the community of Dürwiß. This coat of arms stone was walled in over the portal of the old parish church, which was completely destroyed in the war and which was originally the family chapel of the von Broich family, until 1944.

The left half is the coat of arms of the von Broich family (in the center of the shield you can see the bar that can still be seen in the municipal coat of arms today). Above that a three-pronged tournament collar, then the helmet with a crown and finally a goat head with a collar.

The Dürwiss municipal coat of arms shows three roses (two above, one below), the roses come from the coat of arms of the family zu Drimborn ( Drimbornshof ) and in the middle of the shield the crossbar from the coat of arms of those of Broich.
