Schwartzenburg Castle

Schwartzenburg Castle was a moated castle in the village of Dorff, which belonged to Stolberg (Rhld.) In the Aachen city region .

history

Schwartzenburg Castle was built by Reinhard Soldener von Schwartenbergh around 1400. He was a feudal man of the imperial abbey Kornelimünster and was listed in a document of the monastery of October 28, 1404. The buildings represented the core of the village of Dorff, which at that time consisted of only a few houses. Documents from 1442 point to Karsilis von Schwartzenberg as the owner of the knight's fief.

The name of the castle owner changed to Schwartzenburg Castle due to the marriage of Margareta von Schwartzenberg to Franz Voss, who was the bailiff of the state of Kriekenbeck. Margarete's great-granddaughter Maria Voss von Schwartzenberg married Adrian von der Bylandt zu Holtheide. He was the last documented owner of the castle, as it was besieged by the French in 1688, conquered after several days and largely destroyed in the process. Adrian von der Bylandt zu Holtheide and numerous defenders lost their lives in the fighting.

The destroyed parts of the building were used as a quarry for a long time by the residents of Dorff and the surrounding area. It was not until the 18th century that the castle ruins came to a new owner through the marriage of Isabella Freiin von Bylandt and Johann Wilhelm Freiherr von Hompesch-Bellheim. The family sold it towards the end of the 18th century to an unknown Lieven, who soon sold it again. Theodor Gatz and Mrs. Wwe. Hubert Gatz became the new owners in equal parts. Over several generations it came through marriage or in direct line to the current owners, the Gatz, von Agris and von Hoegen families.

There are several stories about the castle that have been handed down in Dorff's dialect. It is popularly known under the name Schwazermesch .

architecture

The original castle was a large quarry stone complex . It had four semicircular corner towers. A moat surrounded the entire area.

Today only the entrance gate of the castle still exists, which gives an impression of the construction of the entire complex.
