Karl Wilhelm Bührer (born June 1, 1861 in Bibern SH ; † 1917 in Berlin ) was a Swiss author and entrepreneur .

life and work

Between 1884 and 1896, Karl Wilhelm Bührer was secretary of the Central Switzerland Geographical-Commercial Society and curator of its collections. In 1897 Bührer founded an illustrated bi-monthly publication with literary and artistic content under the title 1897 "Switzerland", which he was editor-in-chief.

Bührer was convinced of the necessity of an extensive standardization of the format of all printed matter. This idea led in 1905 to the establishment of the "International Mono-Society" under his aegis. The company produced and sold advertising cards in a standard format designed by young painters such as Emil Cardinaux , Burkhard Mangold and Ludwig Hohlwein . The mono cards were the direct forerunners of the artistic painter's poster. However, the company's profitability was low and the company was dissolved in 1911. Bührer moved to Munich, where he and Adolf Saager founded Die Brücke - Institute for the organization of intellectual work , which propagated the world format developed by Wilhelm Ostwald around this time .
