Marian year
In the history of the Roman Catholic Church so far only two Marian years have been held by Popes Pius XII. and John Paul II announced and proclaimed. The decision to proclaim a Marian year is made solely by the Pope .
Marian year 1953–1954
The Marian year 1953 to 1954 was in preparation for the anniversary of the centenary of the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception and was founded by Pope Pius XII. called out. For this he promulgated the encyclical Fulgens corona ("the radiant crown") on the feast of the birth of Mary in 1953 .
Marian year 1987–1988
The Marian year 1987–1988 was related to the 70th anniversary of the Marian pilgrimage site Fátima and the encyclical Redemptoris mater (“The Mother of the Redeemer”) of March 25, 1987. This Marian year ran from Whitsun 1987 to the feast of the physical reception of Mary Committed to Heaven in 1988. It should serve "to reflect again and deeply all that the Council said about the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God in the mystery of Christ and the Church."
This Marian year also marked the beginning of the two thousand year anniversary of the birth of Christ.
