Johann Leopold Krawinkel (born February 7, 1780 in Neustadt ; † July 30, 1842 there ) was the oldest of two brothers and six sisters and the later founder of the Leopold Krawinkel company .

Life

Leopold grew up under tough conditions in Bergneustadt . The meager yields from the mostly stony fields, including potatoes, oats and buckwheat , were the only products of the soil. The area was not very attractive compared to the agriculturally better situated areas of the Siegkreis and the Rhineland, which is why it was also named "Hafer Spain". Because of the arduous routes over mountains and valleys, spinning, weaving and weaving turned out to be the most suitable for earning a living. Due to the poor financial situation, Leopold had to try to find a sideline in order to support his parents in feeding his 7 younger siblings through his earnings.

On December 15, 1806, the day after his wedding, he and his wife started working as a stocking maker. Regine Köster, who had been engaged to him for a few years, helped him bring the business up from the meager beginnings. The couple had three children, Moritz Leopold, Amalie and Friedrich. Leopold soon set up knitting chairs in the so-called publishing system for smallholder home weavers in the neighborhood. Due to the good quality, they soon found new sales markets. Leopold Krawinkel bought his wool himself, which the women and girls then spun into a yarn. This was skilfully twisted and easily milled into the finished product.

Johann Leopold Krawinkel died on July 30, 1842 after a serious illness.
