The Cologne Funken Artillery blue white from 1870 e. V. - the “ Blue Sparks ” for short - is one of the oldest Cologne carnival societies and one of the nine traditional corps in Cologne carnival as well as a full member of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee .

history

Under the chairmanship of the art dealer Franz Bourgois, the Cologne spark artillery (blue / white) was founded in 1870 by members of the regulars' table "Deftige Bürger" . The background was the patriotic enthusiasm for the rising Prussian state . The military successes of Prussia in 1869 and 1870 led to the establishment of the German Empire on January 18, 1871.

The Blue Sparks were based on the model of the light mounted field artillery that Frederick the Great had introduced into the Prussian army, and thus differed from the Cologne city soldiers, who had played an important role in the Cologne Carnival since 1823 as the " Red Sparks ". The Blue Sparks are therefore an artillery and not a cavalry corps, even if they wear dragoon uniforms. The uniform is based on the cut and colors of the Ansbach-Bayreuth-Dragoons . Ansbach-Bayreuth was owned by Prussia at the beginning of the 19th century and only fell to Bavaria after 1814 . Since then, the uniform of the Blue Sparks has been in the colors blue and white.

The Saxon Tower

The Sachsenturm on the Sachsenring

On the initiative of then President Hanns Göbbels, the Blue Sparks applied to the Lord Mayor of Cologne on November 11, 1959 for the half-tower of the medieval city fortifications on Sachsenring. On the promise of Theo Burauen the Blue sparkles than to leave district, the preservation of the heavily damaged tower, founded in 1968 the "Community Building Association Saxony tower e. V. ". From April 1, 1969, the Blue Sparks restored the Saxon Tower and have been using it as their home base since 1970. Since 1983 there has also been the “Blue Funken Way” in Cologne, which is the postal address of the tower. In 1991 the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia placed the Funkenturm under monument protection.
