The Carnival Society of Seiner Tollität Luftflotte eV 1926 is a traditional society in the Cologne Carnival and a full member of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee as well as a member of the Bund Deutscher Carneval .

history

Founded in 1926 by members from various Bickendorfer associations at Butzweilerhof Airport , the name refers both to its madness, Prince Carnival, and to the “ Air Cross of the West ” and the military aircraft fleet stationed there. In addition, before the First World War there was a carnival society called Sr. Tollität Reichsflotte , based on the enthusiasm for the navy under Kaiser Wilhelm II. The KG Sr. Tollität Luftflotte only received its first association statute two years later , in which the “purpose of the society was to maintain and revitalize traditional folk festivals, social gatherings and special carnival events ”.

In 1927 the Austrian operetta and film composer Nico Dostal wrote the “Fliegermarsch” as the signature song of the Luftflotte , the melody of which is still played today as an introduction to carnival meetings and when the dance corps march in and out.

The first meetings initially took place in smaller Ehrenfelder and Bickendorfer halls, but they soon moved to the Ehrenfeld Rheinlandhalle .

After 1945

Office in Josephstrasse, Cologne

After 1945 the name "Luftflotte" was initially banned by the British occupation army , so that the carnival society called itself from 1947 to 1948 "Great Carnival Society Cologne-West" and in 1949 "Flotte Luft".

The first meetings from 1947 took place in smaller cinemas and theaters. In 1951, the Luftflotte organized the first real girls 'meeting ( ladies' session ) in the Cologne Carnival and thus initiated the advance of women into the session carnival, although the Luftflotte is a purely men's society in which women cannot become members.

In 1954, the air fleet went on tour through northern Germany for the first time. Under the motto "Cornflower Blue - An Original Cologne Carnival Splendor Session", the Luftflotte made a guest appearance with its program of hand-made speeches , dance and music in Braunschweig , Hanover , Neumünster , Kiel and Hamburg . In the same year a delegation from the air fleet traveled to Köthen in the GDR to found the 1st Köthen Carnival Society in 1954 . In the 1990s, the contact was revived for Köthener Carnival, and 2005, a delegation carrying air fleet in the Golden Book of the city Köthen. Since 2008, an “ Alaaf ” delegation from the air fleet has been a regular guest of the Grand Council of Carnival Associations in Frankfurt at the “Helau” TV sessions of the Hessischer Rundfunk , the official enthronement of the Frankfurt prince couple .

From the initially smaller Bickendorfer pubs, cinemas and theaters, the venues for the meetings soon moved to the inner-city ballrooms, such as the Hotel InterConti and the Sartory halls . For a number of years now , the opening of the session , the girls' meeting , the pomp and costume meeting and the carnival morning pint with traditional hammers have been taking place in Gürzenich . The air fleet meetings were broadcast by ZDF (girls' meeting) and WDR .

Do Jeck

In close connection with aviation and on the occasion of the landing of the Do X on September 21, 1932 on the Rhine in Cologne, a schematic representation of the twelve-engine Do X flying boat , the largest passenger aircraft at the time, with the motto “Do Jeck” was chosen as the club logo .

On May 20, 2006, for the anniversary “80 years of aviation in Cologne” and “80 years of air fleet”, a Thursday 24th landed on the Rhine under the motto “Spirit Of Cologne” . Also on board were Cologne's Lord Mayor Fritz Schramma , airport director Michael Garvens and, for the air fleet, Senate President Klaus Wolf and Air Fleet President Eric Bock.

Rose Monday procession

For the first time in a Rose Monday procession , the Tollität Luftflotte took part in the first carnival procession after the First World War and after the withdrawal of the British occupation army on January 31, 1927. On her car was a replica of a zeppelin with the inscription “Sr. To see Tollity LUFTFLOTTE L 11 “. The airship captain Ernst A. Lehmann , who had taken over the patronage of the dance corps of the air fleet , drove on this car . Lehmann died on May 7, 1937 as a result of the burns caused by the explosion of the Hindenburg airship .

Except in the years of the Great Depression in 1931 and 1932 and during the Second World War , when there was no Cologne Rose Monday Parade , Sr. Tollität Luftflotte was a regular participant in the Rose Monday Parade. The 1997 float was drawn and designed by caricaturist Jürgen Tomicek .

Since 1954 Sr. Tollität Air Fleet also a regular participant in the Ehrenfeld Tuesday trains , the largest Veedelszoch the city, and include not only the KG Schnüsse Tring , the KG Rhine fleet , the Civil Guard "blue gold" , the KG Drügge Pitter and Ihrefelder Chinese to its sponsoring companies.

Triumvirate

In 2008, KG Sr. Tollität Luftflotte provided the Cologne triumvirate for the first time . Rainer Herschel as Prince Rainer I , Harald Kloiber as the farmer Harald and Thomas A. Heinen as the virgin Albertina. A novelty in the history of the Cologne triumvirate was that all three regents were born in the same Veedel , Cologne-Lindenthal . On Violet Tuesday 2008, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Senate, the triumvirate of the Air Fleet was awarded the title of Honorary Senator. As early as 1976 and 1977, farmers Stephan Ziegler and Eric Bock came from the ranks of the air fleet in the children's triumvirate .

senate

The Senate of the Air Fleet was founded in 1928 at the Butzweilerhof. The Senate is the financial backbone of the association and contributes significantly to the promotion and fulfillment of the statutory purposes and the social life of the association. The Senate has 43 senators and 17 honorary senators. President of the Senate is Klaus Wolf (as of 2014).

Dance corps

In 1927, Franz Richartz appeared as a dance officer and Karl Droese as Mariechen for the first time as a dance couple in the Luftflotte . The appearance of a male Mariechen corresponded to the ideas of the time. In 1931 the dance corps was founded under the direction of the ballet master Karl Theo Steinbach. During this time, the Cologne pianist Franz Engelskirchen choreographed the propeller dance . In 1936, the National Socialists' ordinance prohibited the portrayal of Mariechen by the male sex. The Mariechen had from then actually played by women. The first female Mariechen was Käthe Breuer. In 1967 the dance group became an all-girl dance corps of "stewardesses", to which in 1978 a dance officer was added. In 1988 the dance group was reorganized and young men were again accepted into the dance corps. The dance corps is one of the best dance groups of the Cologne Carnival and has been awarded the Foolish Oscar , an audience award of the Cologne Express , several times .

Orders and honors

In addition to the annual session medals , the Luftflotte has been awarding the Great Order of Merit of KG Sr. Tollität Luftflotte since 1986 . This is only awarded once per season to a person who has made a special contribution to Cologne or the carnival. Winners of the Great Order of Merit include the painter Toni May (1987), Bernd Assenmacher, Honorary President of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee (1988), the "egg" Hans Zimmermann from the Colonia Duett (1994) and the late Mayor of Cologne Norbert Burger (2000) .
