Lavesum has gained national fame primarily due to the Ketteler Hof amusement park and the increasingly popular food sales directly from the farm.

Geographical location

Lavesum is located on the northern edge of the Ruhr area in the middle of the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland nature park . It is located directly northeast of the Hohen Mark , about four kilometers north-northwest of the Haltern town center.

history

Lavesum, chapel

The old form of the place name can be found in early documents: Lowesheim, Loshein, Luoshem, Lohsum or Lorzum.

The place name is made up of two parts: Lo or Loh = "forest" and Hem or home = "home, settlement". As a result, the name Lavesum means something like: "settlement in the forest".

The area was already inhabited in pre-Christian times, Lavesum was first documented in 930 in the register of properties of the Werden monastery . However, there are no further entries in the earlier history. After the chapel was completed in 1467, 16 families (mostly craftsmen) received permission to settle. This center of the settlement was surrounded by the three large farmhouses König, Lohmann and Enstrup. In 1837 Lavesum was assigned to the parish Haltern and in 1929 incorporated into the Recklinghausen district.

The most important son of Lavesum is Joseph König , who is considered the founder of food chemistry . Today a memorial stone on the war memorial chapel points to him. In 2003 the Haltern Gymnasium was named Joseph-König-Gymnasium in his honor . The farm where Joseph König was born is still owned by the König family.

Until 1974 the place belonged to the parish of Haltern parish .

Attractions

  • War memorial chapel, Kapellenstrasse: a small chapel from 1467. The restored wall paintings, which date from the late 15th century and were covered for a long time, are remarkable. Today, in addition to its original purpose as a place of worship, the chapel also serves as a memorial to the fallen and missing people of Lavesum during the two world wars, whose names are listed on memorial plaques inside the chapel.
