The Joseph-König-Gymnasium Haltern am See is the only grammar school in the Westphalian city of Haltern am See . With more than a thousand students, it is one of the larger high schools in North Rhine-Westphalia . It shares a building complex (school center) with the municipal Alexander-Lebenstein-Realschule .

The school received greater media attention in the spring of 2015 after 16 students and two teachers were killed in the crash of Germanwings flight 9525 .

history

The current school goes back to the Höhere Stadtschule founded in 1844 and has existed as a full high school since 1962. Until 2003, the Joseph-König-Gymnasium was called the Städtisches Gymnasium Haltern . On June 18, 2003, the grammar school was named after the chemist Joseph König , who was born in Haltern in 1843 and who was the founder of food chemistry in Germany. On November 15, 2010, the official certification ceremony for the European school took place in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament .

On March 24, 2015, fourteen schoolgirls, two pupils and two teachers from the school were killed in the crash of Germanwings flight 9525 . They were on the return flight from a week-long student exchange with the Institut Giola in Llinars del Vallès .

foreign languages

The sequence of foreign languages ​​is the same as that used in high schools:

1. Compulsory foreign language:

English from grade 5

2. Compulsory foreign language:

Latin or French of your choice from grade 6

3. voluntary foreign language:

French or Latin from grade 8 or 10. Since the 2006/2007 school year, there has also been the option of choosing Spanish as a new foreign language in the upper grades .

Since the 1988/89 school year, the Joseph-König-Gymnasium has been one of the first high schools in the Federal Republic to have a German-English bilingual branch .

Upper school

There are numerous advanced and basic course subjects for the upper level. In addition to advanced courses in German, English, French and Spanish, there are also courses in geography, history, pedagogy, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology. In the basic course area, in addition to the usual compulsory subjects, basic courses in computer science, Latin, philosophy, social sciences, art, music and literature are offered.

Working groups

A theater AG, a musical AG, an art AG, an orchestra, an Internet AG and others are offered as working groups. The main focus of the high school is sport . Talented and capable students in this field can take part in voluntary work groups for handball , volleyball or soccer .
