The junction of the federal motorway 562 (Südbrücke) with the federal highway 9 in Bonn (until July 2008: United Nations Square ) is on the border of the city districts of Bonn and Bad Godesberg and the districts of Gronau and Hochkreuz . All travel routes have been available since the end of 2003, and in the course of 2004 the traffic junction, which also has a tram stop, was completed. In the "ears" of the motorway entrances and exits there are flagpoles for the then 191 member states of the United Nations , where flags are waved on special occasions. Special light arts round off the intersection. Four reflector spotlights are used for lighting, as can also be found in football stadiums. In addition, four light steles were set up.

history

Since the construction of the A 562, it ended on the left bank of the Rhine at a provisional junction with the B 9 . The city of Bonn wanted a representative design for this important junction at the entrance to the federal quarter , based on a design by the Israeli artist Dani Karavan . That is why the place has long been called the Karavan knot .

While it was undisputed that the provisional solution represented a bottleneck in road traffic in the region - in particular there was no possibility of turning south onto the B9 from the autobahn - there were disputes in numerous implementation issues that dragged on for two decades. In addition to land and financing issues, it was also a question of considering a possible further construction of the motorway under the railway line into a possible Venusberg tunnel (southern bypass ). An extension to the west under the railway line with a connection to Servatiusstraße is currently (2008) being discussed.

In 1998 the reconstruction of the junction began. Because Karavan forbade the use of his name after some planning changes, the construction site was now called Europaplatz . The completion date was set for mid-2002, and the budget was 25 million euros.

As a result, three bridges for the B 9 and extending centrally incurred city railway Bonn-Bad Godesberg the rail Bonn together with elaborately designed station, two ramps and "ears" and a fan building for the air conditioning of the then adjacent police headquarters (since 2006 in Bonn Ramersdorf ). The lighting concept was changed during the construction phase. Only the four (of twelve planned) light steles were erected, the foundations of which had already been concreted in a clearly visible manner. During the construction period, the name of the node was changed again. At that time the name was the United Nations , which is why the flags of all the member states of the United Nations at that time waved in the “ears” on special occasions.

The tram stop was officially opened on December 16, 2004. It was opened to traffic on November 1, 2003. In October 2004 the lighting was installed. On August 3, 2005, the 191 flags were hoisted for the first time and the construction phase was thus finally completed. Since then, they have blown at conferences of the United Nations, which is why some of them have remained unheard for more than six months. The one-time raising and lowering of all flags costs around 5000 euros, which represents ten percent of the city's marketing expenditure.

In June 2008, the city council of Bonn decided to abolish the United Nations square without substitution . This name was transferred to part of the former Görresstraße, which is located near the so-called UN campus . The junction between B 9 and A 562 no longer has its own name. The names Olof-Palme- Platz, Platz des Grundgesetzes, (again) Europaplatz, Otto-Wels- Platz and a deliberate namelessness of the square are discussed .
