The United Nations Square is a square in the Gronau district of Bonn . It extends the midst of the federal district instead of the former Gorres road between Heuss avenue and Dahlmann street / corner Karl Carstens -Straße. It forms the center of the international quarter between the United Nations campus and the World Conference Center Bonn (WCCB).

The UN court in Bonn begins at the end of the Kurt-Schumacher -Straße outside the headquarters of Deutsche Welle in Schürmann-Bau and the Rhine hand behind it " Langen Eugen ", the former parliamentary office building of the German Parliament , now the UN Campus belonging. After the intersection with Heussallee (mountain side / left) and Hermann-Ehlers- Strasse (Rhine side / right ), the extension of the World Conference Center Bonn, including the hotel and connection building, extends on the left - next to one of the former parliamentary houses (Heussallee 11). To the right of the specially designed so-called “Mercator area”, the old high -rise building for the Secretariat of the Framework Convention on Climate Change has been prepared on the UN campus.

To the north of this is the former plenary hall of the German Bundestag, today part of the World Conference Center Bonn. This is followed by the former Pedagogical Academy, the historical core area of the Federal Palace , which, with its auditorium, was the meeting place for the Parliamentary Council . The Federal Council has its seat in Bonn in the north wing of the Federal Palace. The United Nations Square ends at Dahlmannstrasse. Between the congress center and the hotel / connecting building there is a passage via the so-called “Welckerpassage” to Karl-Carstens-Straße.

The former Görresstrasse still led over the intersection with Dahlmannstrasse. This section is now also called Dahlmannstrasse and can therefore no longer be confused with the second Bonner Strasse, which continues to be called Görresstrasse. The only residents of this spur road are the former state representation of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the former Federal Chancellery building at Dahlmannstrasse 4 .

The square was named on the decision of the Main Committee of the City of Bonn on June 11, 2008. Before July 1, 2008, the intersection of the 562 and 9 federal highway was designated as the United Nations square , which is now without a special name (→ A562 junction / B9 ).

At times, the square only consisted of a pedestrian passage through the construction site for the expansion of the World Conference Center Bonn. The topping-out ceremony was held on September 19, 2008. The completion of the congress center was uncertain due to a construction freeze since September 2009 and was delayed until summer 2015. The final expansion of the square was mainly carried out in the course of the renovation of the outdoor facilities of the WCCB in four construction phases from February 2014 to March 2015, the remaining area in front of the WCCB -Hotel construction was not completed until the end of September 2016. A final construction phase at the corner of Heussallee was made with funds from the funding agreement “Strengthening the UN location Bonn” from July to October / November 2017, which was concluded between the federal government and the Federal City of Bonn in February 2016 and signed in May 2016.
