history
The place name is of Slavic origin, but the year the church was built in 1150 indicates that there was already a settlement of German origin at that time. By the 14th century at the latest, Vehlitz belonged to the territory of the Kursachsen , which had formed an exclave around Gommern in the Magdeburg-Brandenburg area.
The Saxon rule lasted until 9 April 1808, when the office Gommern as a result of the alliance between Saxony and Napoleon I. a canton of the French kingdom of Westphalia was. This episode was short-lived, however, as the French were expelled by Prussian troops on April 30, 1813 . A few weeks earlier, at the start of the War of Liberation, Vehlitz had been the scene of fierce fighting between French and Prussian-Russian troops, in which the French suffered their first defeat. A memorial on the outskirts still reminds of the theater of war.
With the establishment of the Jerichow I district , Vehlitz officially belonged to the Prussian kingdom from 1816. Since the new traffic routes built in the following period did not touch the place, it remained a small farming village. However, some of the farms with the typical East Elbe archways that are still preserved today are evidence of the good profitability of agriculture.
The population remained relatively constant throughout the 20th century. In 1910 there were 494 inhabitants, in 1933 only 476 inhabitants and in 1964 only 460 inhabitants. The collectivization of agriculture during the GDR era also resulted in Vehlitz being laboriously straightened at the beginning of the 1960s in order to optimize large-scale farming in the immediate vicinity.
The German reunification brought advantages for the local infrastructure. The main street was redesigned and a modern residential complex was created from a former farm. A former landfill has been converted into an arboretum in which sixty different species of trees and shrubs have been planted. A pig breeding business continues the agricultural tradition, but a few new businesses have also settled here. On January 1, 2005, Vehlitz was incorporated into the city of Gommern.

Attractions
- The St. Stephen's Church is west of the thoroughfare near the end of the village in the direction of Möckern. It is a late Romanesque building, consisting of the nave, a transverse rectangular tower in the west and a narrower, straight chancel in the east. Despite some renovations in the 16th century, Romanesque windows are still preserved on the north side. The interior of the nave is closed with a flat ceiling that was decorated with paintings in the 1930s. A gallery runs along the north and west walls. A Gothic baptismal font from 1454 is the oldest piece of furniture, but the late Gothic three-winged carved altar from the beginning of the 16th century, which shows Mary and the twelve apostles, is particularly noteworthy.
- The Ehleschlacht monument is located at the northeast exit of the village, about 200 meters from the right-hand side of the road in the direction of Möckern. It was built on the centenary of the fighting in 1913 and reaches a height of about six meters.
