Menz is a district of the city of Gommern in the district of Jerichower Land in Saxony-Anhalt , Germany.

geography

Menz is eight kilometers to the north-west of Gommern. Both places are connected by federal highway 184 , which also leads to the state capital Magdeburg , twelve kilometers to the west . The area around Menz is dominated by agriculture, bordered in the west by the river Ehle and in the east by the Potstrine. A striking feature is the ten meter high sand dune overgrown with deciduous trees in the middle of the village.

history

The first traces of settlement indicate that people lived in today's Menzer area as early as the Younger Stone Age (around 2000 BC). The first written document that mentions a place Mentitz comes from 1207. It is disputed among experts whether this place name is derived from the Slavic family name “Mĕnota” or as a reminder of the homeland of the immigrants from Mainz. The spelling of the place name from 1220 speaks for the latter theory: Meynz.

For a long span of its history, Menz and its neighboring village Wahlitz were tied to the Königsborn manor . So it also shared ownership with him. In the 15th century it belonged to the Magdeburg Lorenz Monastery, which gave the property to various noble families one after the other, including the von Alvensleben family (first half of the 16th century) , who were often represented with land in the Magdeburg area . From 1834 the well-known Magdeburg factory owner family Nathusius was the owner. Due to its scenic location, Menz has always been characterized by agriculture. In 1782, 14 farmers and six small farmers were identified, but they were subject to taxes on the Königsborn estate.

While today's main municipality of Gommern was first Ascanian , then Electoral Saxon and from 1807 to 1813 part of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia , Menz belonged to the sphere of influence of Brandenburg-Prussia since the end of the Thirty Years' War . When Prussia reformed its district structure after Napoleon's defeat, Menz was incorporated into the Jerichow I district with the district town of Burg in 1818 .

The GDR , which was founded after the defeat of Germany in World War II, changed the district administration for Menz in 1952 in such a way that the new Burg district was now responsible. Previously, the Menzer farmers had obtained complete independence through the land reform of 1945 and the associated expropriation of the Königsborn manor. They could only use these until 1953, when the ten Menz farms had to join the LPG in Wahlitz in the course of the collectivization of agriculture persecuted by the GDR authorities . In the 1960s, the LPG had a large hatchery built in Menz with six stables in the north of the village.

After the decline of socialist agriculture in 1990 there were no more farmers who wanted to go into self-employment again. An agricultural cooperative was founded in Menz under German law, which from then on took over the management of the Menzer district. Administratively, the place came into the district of Jerichower Land with the old and new district town of Burg. When a dyke broke during the flood of the century in neighboring Gübs in the summer of 2002 , Menz was also inundated by the floods, which caused severe damage. On January 1, 2005, Menz was incorporated into the city of Gommern.

Evangelical Church of St. Paul

The village church dedicated to the apostle Paul was built in 1525 enthroned on the sand dune above the town. The towerless hall building contains late Romanesque elements from a previous building in the northwest corner . The walls are made of rubble and plastered, and a polygonal choir is added to the east. Extensive structural changes took place in 1730. The new main entrance was created in the west portal, the window openings were redesigned and a patron's box was added on the north side in the baroque style . The interior of the church is closed off by a flat ceiling. On the western wall there is an epitaph of the former Königsborn manor owner and church patron Ziegesar from the 16th century. In 1944 the church was destroyed to the ground by acts of war. In the years 1954 to 1959 the reconstruction took place, in the course of which one also began to add a tower on the north side. At first it was only built up to the eaves height of the nave and is now used from the sacristy room. In 2011/2012 the tower extension was increased to around 24 meters and was given a top.

politics

The office of mayor is planned for the individual districts of the city of Gommern . Most recently, Margrit Peters ( CDU ) was elected by the Menz residents.
