Young and old oaks form new rows of trees after the renovation

The Fürstenallee is a section of the country road L 937 in the district of Lippe , North Rhine-Westphalia ( Germany ).

The historic section of the road, which is known as the most beautiful oak avenue in the Lippisches Land, joins the junction of the southern Teutoburg Forest and the northern Egge Mountains a little south of the Gauseköte pass , which connects Detmold and Schlangen . The mostly flat and completely straight road is accompanied by bicycle paths.

Over a length of 2.5 km you can admire ancient oaks and beeches on both sides of the road in the Oesterholz area . They were planted in four rows between 1725 and 1730 and, as an avenue, represented the appropriate access to the Oesterholz hunting lodge . The avenue was the calling card of the state, the counts and princes of the Lippe on the border in the southeast. The section between Haverkampsee and Alleehof is now under protection, because the impressive extension in length and width makes the facility a natural and cultural monument that is unique for Westphalia and Lippe.

Since the spring of 2009, the four-line and over two kilometer long avenue has been renovated in sections for the purpose of rescue. The dilapidated tree population is gradually being removed in favor of hundreds of new young oaks to be planted, whereby 40 old oaks are to remain as contemporary witnesses and natural monuments . The completion of the renovation measures is planned before 2020.

Trivia

It is reported that Charlemagne was already on this path.
In 1967 he shot some outdoor shots for the
horror film, The Snake Pit and the Pendulum, directed by Harald Reinl , on a section of the avenue between Heidestrasse and the Kreuzkrug.
