A tank road is a special type of public road or military road .

Panzer roads are created where often armored tracked vehicles driving, for example, from the barracks into a training area , location nearby military training area or loading station . Since an asphalt road can be quickly destroyed if armored tracks are used frequently, armored roads often consist of bone stones or concrete slabs . The joints between the individual concrete segments are filled with permanently elastic joint compound in order to compensate for temperature-related changes in size and to avoid stress cracks.

There were numerous tank roads in the GDR ; these were used by tanks of the National People's Army (NVA) and / or the Group of the Soviet Armed Forces in Germany (GSSD). For the deployment of tanks in the event of war, 11,700 km of tank roads were built on GDR territory; 15 ran in an east-west direction and four in a north-south direction. For comparison: the GDR trunk road network was almost 10,000 km.
