history

The former fortress was built around 1620 according to plans by Ghert Evert Piloot. It was equipped with a castle and a village church and was surrounded by an outer work. The complex was badly damaged in the Thirty Years' War and largely fell into disrepair in the 17th century. The buildings were excavated in the 19th century and 1934. Some earth walls and ditches have been preserved.

Attractions

Located in the south of the village and built in the second half of the 13th century village church is a historically significant attraction. The 47 meter high tower has been a landmark for ships entering the Wismar Bay for centuries . The church is still partially surrounded by the remains of the ramparts of the former fortress Poel, which together with the island of Walfisch, the Wismar Bay and the port entrance to Wismar controlled and secured.
