Ernst Susemihl

Ernst Susemihl (born on November 20, 1807 in Kirchdorf on the island of Poel ; died on February 3, 1863 in Pankow ) was a German translator and young Hegelian .

Life

Ernst Susemihl was the fifth child of Pastor Dietrich Christian Susemihl (1797–1842) and Anna Sophia Catharina Zastrow (1767–1836). In 1827 he studied at the University of Rostock and received his doctorate. phil. He exchanged letters with Arnold Ruge and wrote articles and reviews for the Halle Yearbooks . After they were banned, he was only known as a translator of English and French literature. He translated works by William Shakespeare (1839), Nathaniel Parker Willis (1840), Walter Scott (1841), Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1845), Alexandre Dumas père (1848), George Payne Rainsford James (1851), John Pendleton Kennedy ( 1852), Benjamin Disraeli (1853), William Harrison Ainsworth (1854), Susan Bogert Warner (1854), John Pendleton Kennedy (1855), James Grant (1856), Emma Dorothy Eliza Nevitte Southworth (1857), Charles Augustus Murray (1858 ) and Elisabeth Wetherell (1859).

His most successful translation was Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield , which was published by six publishers during his lifetime.

He lived in Reudnitz and Pankow, where he died on February 3, 1863.
