Theodor Mügge , actually Friedrich Theodor Leberecht Mücke (born November 8, 1802 in Berlin ; † February 18, 1861 ibid) was a German writer and author of adventure novels .

Life

He was the son of the businessman Johann Leberecht Mücke (* 1754, † 1814) and of Sophia Mücke, b. Schultz (* 1767; † 1832). Theodor Mügge was initially an apprentice in a materials store, then a soldier for a short time. In 1826 he began to sit in on the natural sciences, history and philosophy at the Berlin University . In 1832 he finally submitted a doctorate at the University of Jena , which was refused. In 1832 he married the opera dancer Wilhelmine Reiff (* 1797, † 1842). The marriage remained childless. After the death of his first wife on October 3, 1846 in Neuwied, he married Pauline Kalisch (1823–1904), whom Mügge had met in the house of her uncle Prof. Ernst Kalisch. This second marriage resulted in three daughters: Hedwig, Jenny and Alma Mügge.

Since the beginning of the 1830s, Mügge devoted himself entirely to literature and journalism, and worked for numerous fiction and political journals as well as large daily newspapers. He was a close friend of Theodor Mundt and, as a committed liberal writer, was part of the Young German movement. In 1848 he was involved in founding the Berliner Nationalzeitung , whose features he edited for a while. He became best known for his numerous novels and short stories , all of which are characterized by inventiveness, thoughtful treatment of the subject matter, and easy and pleasing presentation.

Just as the novels with the background of Nordic life were Mügge's best poetical achievements, so the descriptions of the north also stood out among his travel pictures, and if the geographical and ethnographic peculiarities of the countries he traveled through were well understood, the political conditions are also discussed with expert knowledge .

He was co-editor of the historical-romantic paperback series Vielliebchen (1828 to 1861). The Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie writes about him “The freedom train, which ran like a red thread through Mügge's life, also inspired his creations”.

In a form adapted for the youth, some works found even more recent editions. The author found literary expression in Arno Schmidt's late work .

He is the grandfather of the writer Hans Dominik . It was developed by Friedrich Nietzsche found worth reading.

Theodor Mügge died in Berlin in 1861 at the age of 58 from the effects of a "head rose". He was buried in Cemetery I of the Jerusalem and New Churches in front of the Hallesches Tor . The grave has not been preserved.

Details

  1. The year of birth is sometimes incorrectly stated in reference works as 1806, for example in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie . Hugo Willich, however, determined the correct year of birth as early as 1923: "According to the baptismal register of the Jerusalem Church in Berlin, which I have viewed personally, 1802 is definitely the year of birth." (Willich 1923, p. 5.) The parents had Mügges Lived in wild marriage since 1790 and only married on May 30, 1802. That could have been the reason for specifying a later year of birth (cf. Willich 1923, p. 6). The name change (Mücke in Mügge) could also have taken place "in order to disguise the uncomfortable family circumstances of the parental home." (Willich 1923, p. 6.)
