Life

Carl Schröder was a son of the pedagogue and theologian Ferdinand Schröder (1812-1884). Schröder attended grammar school in Schwerin and first studied law in Jena and from 1860 in Munich philology with Konrad Hoffmann and history with Giesebrecht . In May 1864 Schröder received his doctorate in Rostock.

In autumn 1864, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg appointed him educator and travel companion of Hereditary Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. to southern France and Dresden.

In 1868 Schröder joined the historical commission at the Academy of Sciences in Munich . From 1872 to 1880 he worked at the Otto Spamer publishing house and then scientifically at Baedeker . In between he was able to accompany the Hereditary Grand Duke on a trip to the southern and eastern Mediterranean region.

His good contacts with the ducal house meant that in July 1885 he was entrusted with the management and redesign of the ducal government library in Schwerin. In 1891 Schröder was appointed a councilor and in 1899 a secret councilor. In the summer of 1914, Schröder resigned from office for health reasons.
