Hermann Theodor Oelckers (born June 21, 1816 in Leipzig ; died January 20, 1869 there ) was a German writer , translator and revolutionary 1848/49.

Life

Nothing is known about Theodor Oelcker's parents and youth. After he graduated from high school in Leipzig, studied medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1837 . According to consistent reports, he had been working as a writer and translator since 1839. His first publication was that of the poem Seifried Schweppermann (1836) and the translations of three dramas by Shakespeare (1839). His book The Movement of Socialism and Communism in 1844 caused a greater stir . First, it was banned on September 11, 1844 in the Kingdom of Bavaria and probably also in Saxony. and second, he was suspected of plagiarism. Like many other writers, he was spied on by Metternich agents, in his case by Confident Jacob Eduard Singer , in the pre- March period . His biographer Franz Brümmer wrote his “scholarly writings” that “received little attention. His poems (1847), which reveal a deep poetic content and delight with their fine expression of thoughts, were more successful. "

During the March Revolution , Oelckers took an active part in the clashes in Leipzig. He participated in the association of Robert Blum and in May 1849 adhered to the new imperial constitution and was also involved in the Dresden May uprising. Oelckers was arrested for high treason. In October 1849 he was additionally sentenced to ten months imprisonment for a press offense, printing an article by Karl Heinzen and Gustav Struve in the city of Altenburg , which does not belong to Saxony . He himself reported on his ten years' imprisonment and his suffering in a book From Prison Life . Occasionally reports about the bad and z. T. inhumane conditions in the penitentiary Waldheim , so z. B. in the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung .

On June 12, 1859, Oelckers arrived in Leipzig without having signed a petition for clemency. Of the May prisoners, only Robert Binder , August Röckel, Franz Moritz Kirbach and the postal secretary Martin were incarcerated in Waldheim. He described his imprisonment in the book "From Prison Life". In contrast to August Röckel, his description of imprisonment is not marked by bitterness. His poems "Meine Mitgefangenen" (1860) were political in the opinion of the people.

At the suggestion of Friedrich Gerstäcker , he traveled to Porto Alegre in 1861 to set up a newspaper for German emigrants. The "Deutsche Zeitung. Tageblatt ”appeared on August 10, 1861. Oelckers wrote against the influence of the Jesuits . In 1862 he returned to Germany. In Leipzig he met August Bebel . He remembered him in his memoirs. “There were Rossäßmler , Dolge , who had been convicted of his participation in the May rise (...) and then sat in Waldheim for eight years. The 'criminals' also included Dr. Albrecht (...) Dr. Burckhardt , Dr. Peters , Theodor Oelckers, Dr. Fritz Hofmann , known as' Gartenlaube'-Hofmann, etc. We boys considered it a special honor to have a glass of beer at this table in the company of the old. "

In his last book publication in 1867, Oelckers returned to his beginnings, the struggle for democracy and republic, by translating Tocqueville's L'ancien régime et la révolution (1856) into German ( The old state and the revolution ).

Theodor Oelckers died on January 20, 1869 in a Leipzig hospital.

His friend Karl Albrecht mentions him in 1881: “Of the friends who supported me with their own notes, I must first mention the writer Theodor Oelckers; he was born in Leipzig like myself. "
