Peter Benary

Peter Benary (born September 17, 1931 in Erfurt ; † September 27, 2015 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss musicologist , composer and specialist book author.

Life

Peter Benary studied at the Weimar University of Music and at the University of Jena . After fleeing the GDR for political reasons, he worked as a music teacher in St. Gallen from 1958 to 1961 . He then taught music theory , music history , analysis and chamber music at the Lucerne Conservatory until 1998 .

His musicological publications are mainly the 18th century, Anton Bruckner , the work analysis and the musical metrics . His compositional work includes symphonics , a ballet , chamber, piano, organ and choral music. Benary's works are stylistically not bound to any particular musical genre; they have been awarded several national and international prizes. Benary wrote several series for Swiss radio. In 1987 he was awarded the Art and Culture Prize of the City of Lucerne .

Peter Benary was a great-grandson of the horticultural entrepreneur Ernst Benary and a brother of Arne Benary .
